Processing a bereavement
I often think the experience of being a parent of a child with differences is like being on an emotional roller coaster.
Hidden disabilities can be visible
I really enjoyed my conversation with Kirstie Law on Wednesday 15th January. If you didn't manage to catch hit you can listen to it on the BBC Sounds App until 14th February.
When they're not listening
Sometimes people just aren’t listening. Sure they go through the motions, they interact at the right time, they appear to be considering your views, they may even suggest solutions. And yet they’re not listening.
Mediation Matters
Doing what I do, I get to support parents at mediations. I see it as a huge privilege to be invited to attend a mediation meeting, and I hope that I am able to provide not only moral support but an objective viewpoint.
Children know what they need
When my son was first identified with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) we enrolled him in weekly occupational therapy sessions. I’ll admit at the time I was very uncomfortable with the idea…
Reduce anxiety by showing not saying
Looking back, if you were to ask me what one thing have I learnt that has made the biggest difference to our lives, it would be the power of images to reduce anxiety.
#WithNotFor
There’s a quiet revolution happening in Muswell Hill, London and I’m excited to see where it leads.
Summer holidays - delight or dislike?
School summer holidays are long. And no matter how much your child struggles at school, you may find that they appear to equally dislike the holidays.
Personal Budgets fill the cracks
I have a friend who can’t find trousers to fit. They are always too long. They have been faced for many years with the pain of having to do their own alterations which have never really worked or the expense of custom-tailoring. They have a dream of finding a shop that will alter their trouser hems while they complete their shopping elsewhere, for a nominal charge. I have a friend who can’t find trousers to fit. Dealing with an epidemic
Somehow we have to find ways to support our children with their anxieties. Imagine waking up every day and having to face your worst nightmare. The long-term effects of this would be damaging beyond belief, both emotionally and physically.
I can't...
As parents, we’ve all had those moments, when our child has used those dreaded words, “I can’t”. Depending on your own upbringing, philosophy and perspective your reaction to those words, may range from “OK”, through, “you can’t yet,” to “of course you can!”
Making emotions visual
We have a new gadget in the house. And whilst it’s a gadget it’s doing a really important job of helping my son to learn an important skill.
To go or not to go... that is the question
Many parents, somehow manage to get their highly anxious children into school on a daily basis. Despite the refusal, the tears and whatever else is thrown at them, somehow they manage to talk their child into school.
